New life explosión in Loro Parque, after the recent birth of 3 cute meerkats (Suricata suricatta) which together with other youngs, like Rocky, the sea lion, the Bambu sharks and various species of parrots, expand the animal family of the most recognized zoo in Spain.
These attractive and curious mammals, known as “rock cats”, stand out for their high dynamism, speed and social customs, as they play in group, while one of the adults excercise as sentinel and controls the environment around them. After 2 months of pregnancy, the birth developed normally and did not require any intervention of the veterinarian or keepers team. The youngs are fed by the mother and together with the rest of the group, they enjoy the sun, make excavations in the ground and surprise all visitors, who adore to watch them.
Meerkats descend from the mongoose family and live in the area of the Kalahari Desert and the Namib in Africa. It is a small mammal, which can achieve a weight of 1 kg and a large of 50 com, of which 25 cm belong to the tall. They are diurnal and very stricking, especially for children, because they are mostly on their backlegs on guard, looking for prey or to avoid being chased by predators. They are carnivores and as such, they eat insects and spiders, and other small mammals. They hunt always together and protect very strongly their youngs.
Meerkats are usually sympathetic and delicate animals, so that particularly children love this exhibition, that Loro Parque specially developed for the meerkats. These animals are reminiscent of the familiar figuer of the famous Disney movie “The Lion King”. In their area of origin it is not unusual to keep them as pets, but in the West they are not considered as suitable pets, because their behaviour is extremely destructive and in many countries the possession of meerkats, as well as other wild animals, is punishable by law.
Diverse and numerous species of water, land and air have filled the nurseries of the park in the recent months, being breeding the main indicator of the welfare that the animals enjoy in their different ecosystems.
